Materials
Carter’s shelves and work surface are made from oak because of its beautiful grain, its strength and its sense of heritage. Knots are variations in tone are completely natural and, with use, the oak will continue to take on more character. It’s combined with steel, a metal chosen for its load-bearing strength as well as its hint of industrial style.
The finish: oak
The oak goes through a seven-step process of brushing, staining and buffing to highlight its grain. It’s then protected with IsoGuard®, our treatment oil that helps it stand up to spills without masking its texture. We’ve aptly called the resulting finish Dark Vintage Oak.
The finish: steel
Traditionally, steel is given a durable, blackened finish through quenching. But this is an industrial process that’s just not practical for us, so we powder-coat Carter’s frame instead. Almost black in colour but with a hint of bronze, it’s a finish that will age gracefully, taking on more patina over time.
Design detail
One of the loveliest things about Carter is how clean-cut its edges are: they give it a sense of neatness in contrast to the texture and finishes of the oak and steel. For practicality, there are discreet rubber feet underneath so you can place it on hard flooring without worrying about scratches.
A styling tip or two
Carter is the perfect partner to our Henley kitchen, especially when the latter features oak cabinetry and Black-Bronze hardware, but it can easily sit alongside any kitchen in a more contemporary space. When it comes to filling the shelves underneath the prep space, we’d suggest using a variety of baskets to bring a sense of order, mixed in with large pots and dishes.
